UN sanctions regime, Haiti under evaluation

Port-au-Prince, July 24, 2026.- The United Nations initiated a series of consultations with the Haitian authorities to assess the implementation of the sanctions regime established by the Security Council. Received by the Minister of Defence, Mario Andrésol, the United Nations delegation reviews progress made in the fight against armed groups, trafficking in arms and strengthening the rule of law, in accordance with resolution 2794 (2025).

On the afternoon of Thursday, 23 July, Defence Minister Mario Andrésol welcomed a delegation from the Department of Political Affairs and Peacebuilding of the United Nations Secretariat. The mission was composed of Melanie Ramjoue, Pedro Inchauste and Jean A. Charar.

This visit is part of an assessment mission to the relevant Haitian authorities. It aims to assess the progress made in implementing the sanctions regime adopted by the United Nations Security Council.

The consultations include strengthening judicial capacity and the rule of law, reducing violence attributed to armed groups, abductions and sexual violence, as well as efforts to combat illicit arms trafficking and diversion and financial flows.

This mission is carried out pursuant to resolution 2794 (2025), which instructs the Secretary-General of the United Nations, in consultation with the Panel of Experts, to assess the progress made by Haiti in achieving the objectives set by the Security Council.
