Port-au-Prince, July 24, 2026.- Two days away from the 71st anniversary of the Konpa, Prime Minister Alix Didier Fils-Aimé paid a solemn tribute to the great figures of this national musical heritage. The ceremony, organized this Friday, July 24 at the Hotel Montana by the Ministry of Culture and Communication, was also marked by the official launch of the Programme of Support for Cultural Activities, confirming the Government's desire to strengthen the cultural sector and enhance Haitian heritage.
The Government of Haiti reaffirmed its commitment to culture by honouring the great figures of Konpa at an official ceremony held at Hotel Montana in Petion-Ville. Chaired by Prime Minister Alix Didier Fils-Aimé, the event brought together members of the Government, representatives of the diplomatic corps, artists, writers, musicians and many actors from the cultural world.
Organized by the Ministry of Culture and Communication, this ceremony praised the exceptional contribution of pioneers and artisans of Konpa, considered one of the main symbols of Haitian cultural identity. The Prime Minister paid a special tribute to Nemours Jean-Baptiste, recognized as the founder of the genre, while stressing the role of Konpa in the international outreach of Haiti.
The event also marked the official launch of the Cultural Activities Support Programme, an initiative to support creators and cultural institutions. The Minister of Culture and Communication, Emmanuel Ménard, took the opportunity to present several structuring projects, including the rehabilitation of heritage sites, the creation of cultural houses in the departments and the tabling of the Ministry's draft organic law.
This celebration comes as the Konpa prepares to celebrate its 71st anniversary, on 26 July, and one year after its inclusion in the UNESCO Representative List of Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity.
The ceremony ended with the distinction of more than twenty cultural associations for their contribution to the preservation and transmission of Haitian heritage. Through this initiative, the Government intends to make culture a lever of national development, social cohesion and the international influence of Haiti.
