Morne-Casse, February 6, 2026.- The United Nations Development Programme (UNDP), the Ministry of the Environment (MDE) and the Government of Japan inaugurated, January 30, 2026, the Morne Casse Solid Waste Landfill Centre, a strategic infrastructure to sustainably improve waste management in north-east Haiti, reduce health and environmental risks and build the capacity of local communities.

Implemented in the commune of Fort-Liberté, the centre was implemented as part of the Project to Strengthen the Solid Waste Management System in Haiti, implemented by UNDP with funding from Japan. It offers the municipalities of Fort-Liberté, Ouanaminthe and Ferrier a secure and controlled site, replacing wild deposits that exposed local populations, the environment and economic activities to serious risks.

The inauguration ceremony was attended by the UNDP Resident Representative in Haiti, Xavier Michon, the Minister of Environment Moïse Jean-Pierre Fils, the Head of Cooperation of the Embassy of Japan, Ueno Yohei, as well as local authorities and civil society organizations. Officials welcomed an infrastructure that will become a model for sustainable waste management in the country.

With a landfill locker of over 22,000 m2 and a lift bridge, the centre will allow better monitoring of treated waste volumes and more efficient planning. Beyond landfilling, the site opens up prospects for sorting, recycling, composting and eventually producing biogas, contributing to local economic development. This initiative is part of Haiti's efforts to achieve Sustainable Development Goal 11, in a context where less than 40% of waste is currently collected nationally.
