Matiado Vilmé, a light of Haitian journalism

Haitian journalist Matiado Vilmé died this Sunday, February 1, 2026, around 6 p.m., in Doco, in the commune of Pétion-Ville, after a long and courageous fight against colorectal cancer. She is 35 years old, a collaborator of VOA Kreyòl, leaving behind two children and a deeply tried family.

Engaged and respected in the media, Matiado Vilmé was distinguished by his professionalism and dedication in the field. Diagnosed in 2024, she had undergone several heavy treatments, including surgery and chemotherapy cycles. Faced with the worsening of the disease in 2025, she had had to travel abroad to receive specialized care, thanks to a great boost of solidarity.

Beyond her journalistic work, she will remain in memory for her exemplary courage, particularly during the armed attack on the Hospital of the State University of Haiti in December 2024, where she had helped wounded colleagues. Her disappearance is a major loss for the Haitian press and for all those she has informed, helped and inspired.
