Greater South: towards urgent modernisation of Antoine-Simon Airport and regional infrastructure

Astrel Joseph

Port-au-Prince, May 4, 2026.- Guest on Radio Magik 9 this Monday, May 4, the businessman Astrel Joseph pleads for an accelerated modernization of the Antoine-Simon des Cayes airport and an improvement of the infrastructure of the Great South. It calls on the State to take urgent decisions to transform air connectivity and boost the regional economy.

During his intervention on Radio Magik 9, Astrel Joseph noted the current limitations of airport and road infrastructure in the Great South, particularly at Antoine-Simon des Cayes airport.

According to him, despite the existence of scheduled commercial and cargo flights to destinations such as Miami and Jamaica, current capacity remains insufficient. It insists on extending the runway to 45 metres wide and an additional 500 metres in order to allow the landing of larger aircraft capable of reducing transport costs and increasing passenger flow.

The businessman also stresses that the economic development of the region depends heavily on better connectivity with other areas of the country and internationally. He mentioned the need to link the Greater South more closely with hubs such as Jamaica in order to stimulate trade and tourism.

In addition, Astrel Joseph calls for urgent intervention by the State through a multi-sectoral commission of public and private sectors to address simultaneously the issues of infrastructure, agriculture, transport and investment.

It therefore highlights the underexploited economic potential of the Great South, despite local initiatives in tourism, agriculture and cultural activities. However, the lack of adequate infrastructure severely limits the impact of these efforts.

Finally, it calls for better coordination between authorities, donors and the private sector in order to transform existing projects into concrete and sustainable results for the region.
