WASH in Haiti: 61% improvement of hygiene practices in two years

Port-au-Prince, February 3, 2026.- An independent evaluation conducted by UNICEF and DINEPA reveals that the strengthening of the WASH system in Haiti led to encouraging progress between 2023 and 2025, particularly in sanitation and hygiene. However, further efforts are still needed to ensure sustainable access to basic services.

According to the results of this evaluation, the Community-wide approach to total community-led sanitation (AKAT) has contributed to a significant reduction in the use of open-air toilets. This has led to a change in behaviour in the recipient communities, according to information published by UNICEF on Tuesday, 3 February.

In addition, the improvement of hygiene practices is reaching a rate of 61 per cent, reflecting a positive impact of the joint interventions of UNICEF, DINEPA and their partners in several parts of the country.

A validation workshop, held last week, analysed the data collected and developed strategic recommendations. The partners reaffirm their commitment to continue efforts to strengthen equitable and sustainable access to water, sanitation and hygiene services for the entire Haitian population.
