The United States decided to authorize Iranian President Massoud Pezeshkian and his delegation to travel to New York to participate in the next high-level week of the UN General Assembly. The State Department confirmed on Thursday, 17 September, that this decision met the obligations of the United States as host country of the United Nations, despite the current conflict between Washington and Tehran, according to Reuters.
This authorization comes at a time when Iran is among the countries affected by the US suspension of entry into the country and the issuance of visas. Since 1 January 2026, Washington has suspended the issuance of visas to Iranian nationals in several categories, with certain exceptions, including for diplomatic and official travel.
The Iranian delegation's presence in New York therefore falls within a particular diplomatic framework linked to US obligations to the United Nations. According to Reuters, members of the delegation will be subject to travel restrictions and certain restrictions while in the United States.
