Former Senator Kelly Bastien denounces a lack of political will in favour of elections

Former Senator Kelly C. Bastien

Port-au-Prince, April 2, 2026.- Speaker on Magik 9 this Thursday, April 2, former Senator Kelly C. Bastien makes a severe observation of the Haitian situation. He accuses the authorities of a lack of commitment and a lack of real will to hold elections since 2021.
Mr Bastien stressed the need for a broad consensus integrating all the forces of the country, particularly on security issues.

The former parliamentarian provided a critical analysis of the current political crisis, marked, in his view, by a flagrant deficit of will of leaders and political actors.

Referring to the various dialogue initiatives, in particular those involving organised political groups, the latter considers that despite some attempts at structuring, efforts remain insufficient and not inclusive.

While acknowledging the responsibility of certain actors who had held positions at the state summit and had minimal legitimacy to enter into serious discussions, he deplored the fact that many political actors were more involved in a policy of « business policy » and refrain from a real crisis resolution dynamic.

Further on, Mr Bastien said that exclusion or widespread mistrust between actors weakens any possibility of building a solid and respected agreement.

The former parliamentarian also insists on the failure of the various steps taken since 7 September 2021 to organise elections. Despite the increase in agreements and structures, no elections have been conducted to date. This situation is attributed to a lack of coherence, monitoring and, above all, a lack of a clear accountability mechanism for the population.

On the other hand, Kelly Bastien warns against an excessive focus on the elections, which he describes as "d"« illusion » in the current context. In his view, priority must be given to security, a prerequisite for any credible popular consultation. It calls for a comprehensive approach integrating the political, economic and social sectors in order to create a genuine framework for stability.

Without this, he warns, the country risks continuing to return to cycles of crisis, even after possible elections.
