CARICOM sets 72 hours for inter-Haitian political compromise

The meeting held on Friday, 30 January 2026 between CARICOM and about ten political parties and representatives of civil society was concluded without concrete agreement. After several hours of discussions, Haitian actors failed to formulate a joint proposal to be submitted to the regional organisation. Faced with this impasse, an additional 72 hours have been granted to try to reach a minimum consensus by Tuesday night.

Exchanges have highlighted deep differences. Several participants were accused of defending primarily the interests of their political structures rather than a shared national cause. On the contrary, other voices argued for a strictly Haitian mediation, believing that no lasting solution can be imposed from outside without real appropriation by the country's living forces.

This meeting, marked by a climate of distrust, revives questions about the ability of actors to overcome their divisions. As the CARICOM deadline is approaching, the pressure is intensifying to find a common position that will avoid further institutional deadlock and pave the way for a credible exit from crisis.
