Port-au-Prince, Saturday, May 30, 2026.- The Haitian Prime Minister Alix Didier Fils-Aimé received, on Friday, May 29, at the National Palace in Port-au-Prince, the US Deputy Secretary of State Christopher Landau, on an official visit to Haiti. Exchanges focused on security challenges, the political situation of the country and cooperation between Haiti and the United States, according to the Primature.
A working session was held at the National Palace between the Haitian and American authorities, in the presence of the members of their respective delegations. According to a communiqué of the Primature, discussions focused on efforts to address insecurity and on the actions undertaken by State institutions in a context marked by the persistence of armed violence.
During the meeting, the Haitian authorities presented several measures implemented in the security field, including the operations conducted by the National Police of Haiti (PNH) and the Armed Forces of Haiti (FAd-H). The Government also referred to the resumption of activities at the National Palace, as well as to cooperation with international partners in strengthening security capacity.
Discussions also focused on the prospects for cooperation between Port-au-Prince and Washington in the areas of governance, institutional stability and support for efforts to restore law and order in the country.
In a message published on his X account at the end of the visit, Christopher Landau presented a broader reading of the Haitian situation. The US official said that when President Donald Trump came to power 16 months ago, Haiti was « at the edge of the abyss « , threatened by armed gangs likely to cause social collapse and a new wave of migration. He argued that the situation had since improved through the establishment of an international coalition to strengthen the country's security capabilities and efforts to stabilize the political environment. Referring to his meeting with the Prime Minister at the National Palace, he also pointed out that this historic building is now located in an area « gang-free « before concluding that « Haiti's security, stability and prosperity are in the interests of our two nations « .
While the Primature has emphasized bilateral dialogue and institutional cooperation, Christopher Landau's statements reflect a desire of the US administration to highlight its involvement in the security advances observed in Haiti. A difference in tone that illustrates the respective priorities of both parties in their communication around this official visit.
