France-Justice: heavy condemnation for Marine Le Pen

On Tuesday 3 February, the Public Prosecutor's Office requested a heavy sentence against Marine Le Pen in the so-called case of Euro MPs of the National Front. The leader of the extreme French right is facing a five-year sentence of ineligibility, with four years' imprisonment, three of which are suspended. The closed part of the sentence could be arranged under an electronic bracelet. A fine of EUR 100,000 was also requested.

These requisitions are part of an emblematic case concerning the alleged use of European Parliament funds. The Prosecutor ' s Office considers that the alleged acts justify severe criminal and political sanctions against the former President of the National Front, according to RFI.

If the Court of Appeal were to follow these requests, the decision expected in the summer would have major political consequences. Marine Le Pen would then be prevented from running for the presidential election scheduled for 2027, a scenario that could defeat the cards within the French far right, RFI believes.
