United States: Trump administration temporarily extends work permits for Haitian GST recipients

Washington, July 10, 2026.- The administration of President Donald Trump announced this Friday, July 10, a short-term extension of work permits granted to temporary protection status (TPS) beneficiaries from Haiti and six other countries.

According to the United States Citizenship and Immigration Services (USCIS), the work permits of Haitian nationals, initially expired, will remain valid until 24 July 2026. GST recipients from Ethiopia, Syria, Somalia, Yemen, South Sudan and Myanmar also benefit from a one-week extension.

This decision comes after the Supreme Court of the United States authorized the Trump administration last month to terminate the GST for Haitian and Syrian nationals.

The GST allows nationals of countries facing conflict, natural disasters or other exceptional situations to reside and work legally in the United States. Immigrant rights organisations had called for this extension, believing that an immediate expiry of work permits would have serious consequences for the workers concerned and several economic sectors.

However, this measure remains provisional and does not alter the Trump administration's policy, which continues to tighten immigration while defending these decisions in the name of national security and the protection of the US labour market.
