Contaminated water: I'm sorry. « admission of failure » Authorities

Port-au-Prince, February 6, 2026.- A study by the Ministry of Commerce reveals that almost all drinking water: cans, bags and kiosks, is unfit for human consumption. Faced with this « dramatic bankruptcy » The National Association for the Defense of the Environment and Sustainable Development (ANADEDU) calls for the immediate removal of contaminated lots and urgent reform of the sector to stop this health catastrophe.

The official survey of 109 samples shows a terrifying finding: 83.5% of the water analysed contains bacteria. The figures by distribution mode are alarmingly high: 100% of the water in 5 gallon cans is contaminated, followed closely by water in kiosks (96.9%) and water in bags (92.6%). Only bottled water appears to be relatively spared with a contamination rate of 6.7%.

The report identifies five groups of bacteria « very harmful », including faecal strains. This situation directly exposes millions of citizens to serious diseases such as cholera, acute gastroenteritis and various infections. LANADEDU describes this crisis as a national emergency, pointing to the failure of control bodies such as DINEPA and MCI.

THE ANADEDU calls for action

In the face of this danger, the association recommends shock measures:

  • Removal of contaminated marks, disinfection campaign (boil water) and free distribution of drinking water in critical areas;
  • the strengthening of control laboratories and the application of severe penalties (plant closures) for infringement companies.

« Population health is not negotiable « , recalls the organisation, which now places the state before its regal responsibilities.
