Climate : Haiti at the heart of the global emergency

New York, April 5, 2026.- The United Nations Development Programme (UNDP) calls for ambitious climate action on April 4, in which Haiti is at a crossroads. For our nation, particularly exposed to natural disasters, the « shared responsibility » referred to by the United Nations is a matter of national survival. Faced with accelerated environmental degradation, the hour is at the mobilization to protect our land and the future of Haitian youth.

Humanity shares one planet, the Earth. Haiti pays one of the highest prices. The diversity of languages must not obscure the specificity of our cry: that of a territory that is plagued by massive deforestation and erosion that weakens our plains.

The UNDP message echoes here as a reminder that environmental protection is not a luxury, but the foundation for social and economic stability in the Caribbean.

In Haiti, talk about « future generations » means acting for a youth who inherits an increasingly vulnerable territory. The ambitious climate action requested by international bodies must be translated into rigorous watershed management and systematic reforestation.

This is the only way to ensure that future Haitian citizens can still cultivate their land and live in safety in their cities and provinces.

The term » Climate action » makes sense in our reconstruction context. It is no longer just a matter of being at risk and showing resilience, but of demanding climate justice and concrete investments in sustainable infrastructure.

Haiti must be part of this global movement not as a passive victim, but as an actor determined to transform its environmental challenges into green development opportunities.

The UNDP appeal should serve as a catalyst for a new social contract in Haiti. Protection of our « only planet » beginning with saving our own soil.

By joining forces, beyond economic crises, we can respond to this global imperative through strong local actions. To preserve Haiti today is to contribute to the survival of the planet tomorrow.
