The Director of Heritage at the Ministry of Culture and Communication, Frantz Délice
Port-au-Prince, 13 March 2026.- Guest Thursday 12 March on Radio Magik 9, the Director of Heritage at the Ministry of Culture and Communication, Frantz Délice explained the challenges of the submission of the archives fonds of Le Nouvelliste to the UNESCO World Memory Programme register. Initiated by the Ministry of Culture and Communication, this approach aims to protect and value more than a century of Haitian journalistic memory.
The Ministry of Culture and Communication continues its efforts to ensure that Haitian documentary heritage is recognized internationally. On 3 March 2026, the institution officially submitted the archives of Le Nouvelliste newspaper for registration in the UNESCO Memory of the World Programme register.
Speaker on Radio Magik 9, Frantz Délice stressed the importance of this initiative for the preservation of national memory. According to him, the daily archives are an exceptional testimony to the political, social, economic and cultural evolution of the country.
Founded on May 1, 1898, Le Nouvelliste is today the oldest Haitian newspaper still in operation and one of the oldest French-speaking newspapers in the Americas. Its holdings include printed historical editions, photographic archives, thematic records and contemporary digital archives.
During the interview, Frantz Délice explained that registration in the international register would enhance the preservation and digitization of these documents while facilitating their access to researchers, students and citizens.
The process is carried out jointly by the Ministry of Culture, the Permanent Delegation of Haiti to UNESCO and the Haitian National Commission for Cooperation with the Organisation.
The final decision will be taken by the Intergovernmental Committee of the UNESCO World Memory Programme. If successful, the archives of Le Nouvelliste will join the list of documentary holdings recognized as world heritage.
