Public transit: Government reviews tariffs after days of tension

After several days of confrontations between drivers and passengers, as well as blockages on the Delmas axis, Petion-Ville, the government announced on Monday a fall in public transport rates. This decision follows the reduction in fuel prices which entered into force on 7 July.

In a communiqué issued by the Ministry of Social Affairs and Labour, the authorities revised several reference tariffs downwards. The Port-au-Prince, Pétion-Ville route increases from 75 to 65 gourdes, that of Port-au-Prince, Delmas from 75 to 65 gourdes, while the taxi race in metropolitan area is set at 100 gourdes instead of 105.

The aim of this measure is to ease tensions and to benefit users from lower oil prices. The main challenge now remains the effective compliance of carriers with these new tariffs and their enforcement throughout the country.
