Earthquake of magnitude 7.3 off Mexico, a tsunami warning triggered

 

A powerful 7.3 magnitude earthquake struck the Pacific Ocean on Friday, July 17, 2026, about 97 kilometres southwest of Tapachula, Chiapas, Mexico, according to the United States Institute of Geological Studies (USGS).

The shock has been felt in several Central American countries, including Mexico, El Salvador and Guatemala. Following the earthquake, the competent authorities issued a precautionary tsunami warning.

At this stage, no official reports of casualties or property damage were provided. The authorities continue to assess the situation.
