Port-au-Prince on the verge of road chaos: traffic lights disappear, accidents multiply

Signal lights are almost non-existent or out of service in several strategic areas of Port-au-Prince, including Delmas, Lalue, Pétion-Ville and on the airport road. This widespread failure greatly disrupts traffic in the capital and increases the risk of accidents.

Although the Ministry of Public Works, Transport and Communications (MTPTC) has a signalling service to maintain these equipment, it would face funding constraints and staff shortages. According to information reported by Ayibopost in an article published on Wednesday, 10 June, officials of this service would be difficult to reach.

This situation is taking place in an already worrying context for road safety. Road accidents remain common in the metropolitan area, with constant pressure on emergency and medical care structures. Humanitarian organizations and ambulance services regularly report a high number of road accidents-related interventions, demonstrating the seriousness of the problem.
