Exchanges of emails revealed by the newspaper Verdens Gang show a closeness deemed troubling, mixing personal confidences and displaced words. At that time, however, Epstein had already been convicted of sexual crimes involving minors.

In the face of the controversy, the royal palace published a statement in which Mette-Marit recognized a « error of judgment » And said to regret any contact with Epstein. She also admitted that she had stayed in one of her residences in 2013, but said that she had not measured the gravity of her past despite research done at the time.

This case occurred when the royal family was already weakened by the judicial difficulties of Marius Borg Høiby, Mette-Marit's eldest son, who was prosecuted for serious charges, including several rapes and acts of violence. He was again arrested on Sunday in Oslo, with police asking for his remand in custody for risk of recidivism.

It should be noted that the Epstein case concerns a vast network of child sex trafficking orchestrated by Jeffrey Epstein, an influential American businessman, involving at least 1,000 minors and young adults. Many personalities were mentioned and several legal proceedings were still under way. In this context, some observers openly question Mette-Marit's future and his ability to one day access the throne.
