Gold Mine at the Border: North-East Haiti Mobilizes Against Major Environmental Threat

An open-pit gold mine could emerge in Restauración, Dominican territory, near the border with the north-east department of Haiti, if the Canadian company Unigold obtains a licence to operate from the Dominican Republic authorities. According to the organisations mobilized, the use of chemicals such as cyanide in the extraction process would pose a serious danger to Haitian water resources and agricultural land.

Meeting in intercommunal meeting, 140 citizens from Cerca-la-Source, Mombin-Crochu, Carice, Mont-Organisé, Vallières, Capotille and Ouanaminthe have undertaken a process of citizen resistance against what they call a project. « death « .
