Home of horror in Ohio: 16 children discovered after years of confinement

The Ohio authorities discovered on Tuesday 30 June 2026, 16 children between the ages of 18 months and 18, in a house with extremely unhealthy living conditions during a search linked to another investigation. According to the first elements, the children lived for at least four years confined in a single room of about 13 m2. Some do not know how to speak, while the 18-year-old, with an intellectual disability, is unable to write her own name.

Investigators describe the residence as one of the most shocking scenes they have ever encountered: garbage, cardboard and piled objects filled the premises. Two children were transported by helicopter to a trauma centre, one of which was in critical condition. The others were hospitalized to receive care before being transferred to child welfare services.

Four adults were arrested: Gary Siders (73), his wife Christina (67), their son Gary Siders Jr. (36) and his wife Elizabeth (33), presented as grandparents and parents of the children. They are prosecuted on 17 counts of endangering minors, including one related to serious physical injuries. Investigators are now seeking to establish the exact relationship and understand how this family has been able to escape all control over social services for years.
