In several major Chinese cities, including Beijing and Shanghai, a new generation of urinals « intelligent » gradually appeared in the male public toilets. These devices, accessible for about 20 yuan (less than 3 dollars), are able to analyze urine in minutes and provide indications on certain health markers, such as calcium levels. Payment is made online, including via the WeChat platform, and results are returned almost immediately.
The existence of these toilets was revealed in April 2024, after a Shanghai-based documentary artist shared his experience on social networks. Without pretending to be a substitute for a medical consultation, the technology aims primarily at raising awareness among the general public about the importance of early detection. If an anomaly is detected, the device encourages the user to consult a healthcare professional.
