The Haitian medical brigade distinguished after its humanitarian mission in Venezuela

Port-au-Prince, July 24, 2026.- The Haitian authorities paid tribute to the members of the medical brigade deployed in Venezuela following the powerful earthquakes that struck this country. The ceremony, held on July 23 at Villa d'Accommodation, was an opportunity to welcome the action of Haitian health professionals who participated in emergency operations in several disaster-affected areas. This mission is part of the bilateral cooperation between Haiti and Venezuela on humanitarian assistance.

Conducted by the Minister of Public Health and Population (MSPP), Sinal Bertrand, the delegation included 29 health professionals, including emergency workers, surgeons, orthopaedists and anesthetists. Deployed a few days after the earthquakes, the team intervened in health facilities affected by the destruction. According to the Haitian authorities, the brigade participated in the reactivation of the operating unit of the Flora Gonzalez Integrated Centre, which had been out of service for almost two years. This intervention resulted in 325 surgical procedures and the management of many patients requiring specialized care.

Beyond medical procedures, the Mission has also integrated a psychosocial assistance component. Haitian teams reportedly accompanied approximately 1,700 people affected by the disaster, while distributing medicines and medical inputs to local health facilities. According to figures provided by the government, these supplies would provide the care of approximately 300 additional patients.

The authorities have also announced the dispatch of an additional seven tons of food kits for affected populations. This assistance will be channelled to Venezuela with the support of representatives of the Caribbean Community (CARICOM), as part of the regional coordination of humanitarian actions. The objective is to complement the efforts already undertaken on the ground by the Haitian medical teams.

During the ceremony, brigade members received certificates of recognition for their participation in the mission. The Government welcomed their commitment and contribution to relief operations, considering that this intervention illustrates Haiti's ability to participate in international solidarity actions despite the difficulties the country itself faces.

This operation is one of Haiti's most important international medical missions. It reflects the continued cooperation between Port-au-Prince and Caracas, two countries which have been linked for several decades by collaborative agreements in various fields, including health, energy and humanitarian assistance. Beyond its diplomatic character, this mission highlights the role that Haitian health professionals can play in regional emergency response.
