World Food Day: more than 5.8 million Haitians facing food insecurity

World Food Day is celebrated this Friday 16 October 2026 around the theme « Innovate today to feed tomorrow »According to the Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations (FAO). This day aims to mobilize public and private actors around the fight against hunger and access to adequate, healthy and nutritious food. In Haiti, this celebration takes place in a context of a continuing food crisis, marked by insecurity, economic fragility and difficulties in supplying markets.

According to the analysis of the Integrated Food Security Classification Framework (IPC), published in April 2026, more than 5.83 million people, or 52 per cent of the population analysed, faced acute food insecurity between March and June 2026. Of these, nearly 1.9 million were in food emergencies. FAO also stresses that armed violence, high fuel costs, disruptions in freight transport and adverse weather conditions affect agricultural production and household purchasing power.

Faced with this situation, the strengthening of domestic agricultural production, the improvement of distribution channels and support for small producers are major challenges in reducing the country's food dependence. Beyond humanitarian assistance, the fight against hunger in Haiti requires sustainable measures to enable farmers to access inputs, markets and financing, while guaranteeing families sufficient income to obtain food. World Food Day thus recalls the urgent need to make food security a priority of public policy.
