Haiti excluded from the summit « Shield of the Americas » regional divisions and diplomatic isolation at the core of tensions

Florida, March 22, 2026.- As geopolitical tensions spread in the Western Hemisphere and several countries strengthen their security alliances, Haiti is once again on the margins of major regional discussions. The country was not invited to the Security Summit « Shield of the Americas « on Saturday, March 21, 2026, in Doral, Florida, at the initiative of US President Donald Trump, a meeting on migration, transnational crime and foreign interference in the region.

The meeting brought together a dozen countries from the continent, including Argentina, the Dominican Republic, Ecuador, El Salvador, Panama and Trinidad and Tobago, as well as several heads of State considered close to Washington. The absence of Haiti, however faced with a major security crisis, occurs in a context where traditional regional mechanisms are struggling to play their coordinating role.

A few days earlier, the Summit of the Committee of Latin American and Caribbean States, held on 20 March 2026 in Bogota, had already revealed the deep divisions of the continent. The low level of participation of the heads of state, with only three presidents present, illustrated the shortness of breath of this organization created in 2010 under the impetus of the then Venezuelan president, Hugo Chávez, to strengthen regional political integration.

In this context, Haiti's exclusion underlines its great diplomatic fragility, at a time when the country's security crisis should attract more attention from the international community.
