United States: Public opinion shifts to immigration

Washington, 16 July 2025.- A Gallup poll reveals a dramatic change in American public opinion: support for reducing immigration fell by 25 points in a year, while a record 79% of citizens consider immigration to be beneficial for the country. This shift concerns all political areas and is accompanied by a sharp decline in support for repressive measures.

While in 2024, more than half of the Americans (55%) wanted a drop in immigration, by 2025 they had only 30% to agree. This figure marks a return to the level of 2021, before tensions on the migration issue increased. The desire for reduction has fallen particularly among Republicans, from 88% to 48%. Among the independents, it rises to 30%, and among the Democrats, to only 16%.

Immigration perceived as a national asset

According to the same survey, 79% of Americans consider immigration to be a good thing for their country, a 15-point jump from 2024. This figure is a historic record, reflecting a change of mind after several years of mistrust. The Democrats reached a peak of 91% of the positive responses, but the Republicans and the independents were the most affected in their perception compared with previous years.

Less support for hard measures

The decline in illegal crossings at the southern border seems to have reduced support to strict measures. The strengthening of the border wall only convinces 45 per cent of respondents, compared with 53 per cent in 2024. Support for the massive expulsion of undocumented people also falls to 38%, down by 9 points. Conversely, 78% of Americans now support the granting of citizenship to illegal immigrants, up in all parties, including Republicans (+13 points).

Trump disapproved, Hispanics in the front line

Despite his strong actions on immigration, Trump remains unpopular on this subject: only 35% of Americans approve of his management. This figure falls to 21% among Hispanics, who express a strong commitment to inclusive policies. 91% support the regularization of undocumented people, but also 16 points less than the average to approve the strengthening of border patrols. Despite some concerns, the majority of this population remains in favour of a humane and integrative approach to immigration.
