Suspended economy: Haitian bank credit facing the wall of insecurity

Port-au-Prince, July 9, 2026.- In Haiti, bank credit experienced almost total stagnation between September 2024 and September 2025, showing a derisory growth of 0.3%. The banking system, hampered by chronic insecurity that paralyzes business, is extremely cautious, while 13 per cent of loans were non-refundable in 2025. In the face of this crisis, the Bank of the Republic of Haiti (BRH) is trying to alleviate the economy by injecting 21 billion guides in the form of moratoria to support businesses and households in distress.

The evolution of credit shows a financial landscape profoundly marked by uncertainty. While loans in dollars increased slightly by 1.9 per cent, the gourd credit fell by 2.3 per cent. This imbalance reflects the defensive behaviour of commercial banks, which prefer to limit risk-taking in the face of declining family incomes and limited sustainable investment opportunities.

Beyond the overall chill, the distribution of funding highlights deep internal gaps. The West Department continues to centralize most of the resources by taking over 75 per cent of the credits, leaving the agricultural sector behind with less than 1 per cent of the envelopes. In addition, access to capital remains unequal: men have more than 63 per cent of gourd loans and more than 75 per cent of foreign currency financing, highlighting the road that remains to be taken towards women's financial inclusion.

In order to avoid a widespread collapse and restore air to economic agents, BRH deployed its Circular 115-6. This emergency measure allows the restructuring of the debt of clients in difficulty by granting them additional time limits and freezing the late charges. In the long term, the institution recalls that the real recovery will require a concrete improvement in the security climate, better support for SMEs and targeted support for projects led by women.
