Colombia: Controversy after Petro's comments on the intimate life of Jesus Christ · Global Voices

Colombian President Gustavo Petro provoked a national outcry saying that Jesus Christ « made love « , explicitly mentioning Marie-Madeleine. These statements, delivered on 29 January 2026, immediately aroused indignation in this country where Christianity remains the majority religion.

The Catholic Church and the evangelical communities reacted strongly, denouncing an offence to the Holy Scriptures and an unacceptable provocation to believers. Many religious leaders demand public apology and call for respect for spiritual convictions, believing that the head of state has crossed a red line.

This controversy revives the delicate debate between political and religious spheres in Colombia, questioning the limits of the freedom of expression of leaders in the face of the religious sensibilities of a population deeply attached to its faith.
