UNIH maintained in Haiti until 2027 in a climate of high concern

New York, 29 January 2026.- On Thursday 29 January, the UN Security Council adopted Resolution 2814 extending the mandate of the UN Integrated Office in Haiti (UNIH) until 31 January 2027. The mission focuses on political dialogue, support for an inclusive process, the organization of elections scheduled for 2026 and the fight against gang violence, while reaffirming the UN's commitment to Haiti's sovereignty and territorial integrity.

The text emphasizes the role of UNIH in coordinating international electoral assistance and supporting the Haitian authorities in organizing credible, transparent and inclusive elections in 2026. It also stresses the need to curb the rise in gang-related violence, including homicide, abduction, sexual violence and forced recruitment of children, while combating arms trafficking and impunity.

The resolution also encourages the strengthening of the judicial system, the fight against corruption and the improvement of prison conditions. The Council calls for regular monitoring of the implementation of these measures and the preparation of a national programme for the disarmament, dismantling and reintegration of gangs, in coordination with regional and international partners.

Despite its extended mandate, UNIH struggles to convince the field. Between persistent violence and political blockages, the effectiveness of the mission remains uncertain, and the United Nations will have to prove that it can really help stabilize Haiti before January 2027.
