Listening to the diaspora, MHAVE wants to get closer to Haitians in difficulty abroad

Port-au-Prince, July 1, 2025.- Invited to the weekly section named « Tuesdays of the Nation « , Minister of Haitians Living Abroad (MHAVE), Ms. J. E. Kathia Verdier, presented a series of initiatives to strengthen the support of the diaspora. She announced the signing of memorandums of understanding with several public institutions to facilitate access to legal documents for Haitians living abroad.

According to the Minister, an agreement was signed with the Directorate of Immigration and Emigration (DIE), the National Identification Office (ONI) and the Central Directorate of the Judicial Police (DCPJ). Thanks to this agreement, more than three thousand ( 3,000) passports have already been issued, out of a total of five thousand ( 5,000) files pending for several years.

In the context of this accompaniment, Ms Verdier referred to the call centre MHAVE Listens , available 24/7, which collects and monitors complaints from diaspora members. She also highlighted the platform Native Natal TV, designed to value the achievements of Haitians living abroad.

Regarding the decision of the Dominican authorities to prohibit access to care for Haitian migrants in an irregular situation, especially pregnant and nursing women, Minister Verdier informed that border hospitals, particularly in Ouanaminthe, offer free services in paediatrics and maternity to Haitian citizens.

The holder of MHAVE pointed out that the ministry regularly receives claims from the diaspora regarding their participation in elected positions and their right to vote. These complaints will be submitted to the Steering Committee of the National Conference and to the Provisional Electoral Council (CEP).

Finally, regarding the Trump administration's decision not to renew the Temporary Protection Status (TPS) for Haitians, Minister J. E. Kathia Verdier said that the Haitian government cannot oppose it, but strives to prepare the country to welcome the compatriots concerned and facilitate their reintegration.
